Witnessing Whiteness group in Kirkwood, 2015
It is a gathering of white people coming together to do our own work around racism in a supportive, non-threatening setting. It is about learning a language to speak about racism. It is about exploring our white privilege and how to use it consciously to help create a level playing field. We educate ourselves on how to become healthy allies to our brothers and sisters of color and much much more.

+++The second Kirkwood WW group is scheduled to start late February or early March in 2015. PLEASE PASS THE WORD. This program is sponsored by the YWCA of St. Louis.

The Importance of Attending Parent Teacher Conference

Children do best in school when parents and teachers work together

Picture
Research shows that students learn more, have higher grades, and have better school attendance when parents are involved in their child’s education. That’s why attending parent-teacher conferences is so important: it’s a great way for parents to become involved and stay involved throughout the school year.  Parent-Teacher conferences are a good way to meet your child’s teacher and learn about your child’s academic performance, as well as the teacher’s expectations. If you know what is expected in the classroom, you can more easily address any issue that comes up as your child moves through the school year.

By attending conferences, you also send a positive message to your child that school is important.  Keep in mind that you are an equal partner at the conference.  If you have questions or observations, the conference is a good time to share them with the teacher. Don’t forget to share what you know about your child. Your information helps the teacher better understand and teach your child.

List Questions or Concerns for the Teacher
  • Does my child hand in homework on time and is it complete?
  • Is my child doing work at or above grade level?
  • How are grades determined?
  • Does my child work better in groups or alone?
  • How does my child get along with others? Adults? Children?
  • Is there any concern about learning or behavior problems that I should know about? If so, what has been tried to help my child?
  • What can I do at home and school to help my child build on strengths and improve weaknesses?
  • How can I keep in touch about my child’s progress?
  • What are some opportunities for me to become involved at school?

Hands on Kirkwood is a one-day mission blitz of our local community. A day when every member of the community is encouraged and empowered to go and to serve. All of us have heard the statement, “It is better to give than to receive.” Most of us believe this statement, but few of us find an intentional way to live it out on a daily basis. Hands on Kirkwood is that intentional way.  It is a simple way – just sign-up - to serve neighbors in need. Neighbors in need of a friend, neighbors in need of yard work, neighbors in need of home repairs, neighbors in need of a smile, neighbors in need of a clothes or a blanket.

Please mark your calendar and plan to be a part of this year’s Hands on Kirkwood community-wide day of service. For More Info: http://www.kirkwoodbaptist.org/community/hands-on-kirkwood/
